Our ultimate goal is to evaluate the potential for sequestering CO2 in the deep ocean through controlled fertilization, but we must first develop the oceanographic platforms (ATOEM), sensors, instruments and methods that will be needed to undertake such investigations. We will begin with more detailed and comprehensive studies of natural phytoplankton blooms and reanalysis of the limited number of ocean fertilization experiments that have been reported previously. We will devise novel sampling schemes and methods to complement the capabilites of the ATOEM platform under incresingly more sophisticated software for Autonomous Science Discovery.
